5.3. Syllabus
Unit I: Background information concerning mass culture: psychoanalysis, critical theories and functionalism. Culture discontent. Two critical perspectives: Horkheimer and Adorno and Benjamin/Kracauer. The case of Walter Benjamin. A contemporary reading: David Harvey.
Unit II: Mass culture and communication in the age of late capitalism: Fredric Jameson. Postmodernity: Lyotard, Jameson and Harvey. Late structuralism and post-structuralism: Michel Foucault, Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari. Mass culture and technique: Vilém Flusser.
Unite III: Networks and mass culture. Víctor Silva and Rodrigo Browne; Mass culture and culture; Film and cultural crisis in La Dolce Vita. A figure of mass culture: the paparazzi. Film as mass culture: neorealism and La Dolce Vita. La Dolce Vita, mass culture and the city.
